Project Name: North Coast Biochar
Our Slogan:  Biochar that supports forest restoration projects in the Redwood Region
Project objective:

The Redwood Forest Foundation Inc. (RFFI) is a non-profit stakeholder organization that acquires, protects, restores, and manages forestlands and other related resources in the Redwood Region for the long-term benefit of the communities located there. We own the 50,000-acre Usal Redwood Forest, a working community forest, in northwestern Mendocino County California. Usal is in need of extensive restoration due to past over-logging. RFFI is removing excess, competing vegetation (biomass) from overcrowded stands to improve forest health and improve wildlife habitat. The excess biomass from Usal will be converted into biochar and sold locally as a soil amendment. The revenue generated by the sale of “North Coast Biochar” will partially support this synergistic forest restoration approach.

The Product. Biochar is a soil amendment that is produced when heat is added to wood in an oxygen-deprived chamber. The result is a wood carbon or charcoal that has an array of potential benefits. Biochar is not a fertilizer; it is an amendment or soil conditioner that improves soil functionality in the following ways:

- Improves soil fertility and crop yield
- Retains nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) improving fertilizer efficiency use and reducing fertilizer run-off into local waterways
- Increases cation exchange capacity (CEC)- the ability for soil to exchange nutrients with plant roots
- Improves water retention, aeration and soil tilth
- Provides habitat for microbes, increasing microbial activity in soils
- Sequesters carbon in farms and home gardens for hundreds to thousands of years.

The logos will be judged on the following criteria

1) Overall appearance of the logo design;
2) Ability to creatively represent both the benefits of biochar to home gardens and the benefits of RFFI’s work to the forest;
3) Ability to convey RFFI’s mission;
4) Ability to engage target customer base:
a. Gardeners and composters who already purchase soil and soil conditioners from nurseries to improve soil health and productivity
b. Environmentally conscious gardeners in Mendocino, Humboldt and Sonoma Counties who care about carbon sequestration, water conservation, fertilizer efficiency / run-off prevention, support production of local inputs into agriculture and care about forest restoration issues.

Industry Type: Eco-Friendly/Green

Our Target Audience:
 Wholesale soil producers whose customer base is environmentally conscious
Gardeners and composters who already purchase soil and soil conditioners from nurseries to improve soil health and productivity
Environmentally conscious gardeners in Mendocino, Humboldt and Sonoma Counties who care about carbon sequestration, water conservation, fertilizer efficiency / run-off prevention, support production of local inputs into agriculture and care about forest restoration issues.

Style and Concept (fonts, colors, geners):

Favorite color- Deep greens, rich browns, but depending on the logo multi bright colors are good, in other cases a single mild color may make more sense- depends mainly on the style of the logo.

Favorite style- nature related- most important aspects in descending order: soil and plant fertility, trees (redwoods), water, fish and wildlife,that benefit from both the production and the use of the product. e.g. symbols representing lushness, life, growth, thriving, ecological functionality etc.
